Now that the holidays are nearly over and it is (almost) a new year, we want everyone to mark the 3rd Tuesday of each month on their calendars. This will be the date for our monthly RS meetings- what was formerly known as "Home, Family and Personal Enrichment" or just "Enrichment" will now be simply known as "Relief Society Meetings". But they are an additional meeting that will happen every month- additional to Sunday meetings. We have been assigned the 3rd Tuesday so that it won't interfere with YW or Primary and our sisters serving in those capacities can join us.
Each month you can look forward to a new class or activity and the activity for January will be announced shortly. With the change, handed down by the General RS presidency and board, to a monthly meeting, we can no longer sponsor monthly activities such as Book Club and Play Group. But we encourage you to continue those activities on your own. Each month at our monthly RS meetings we will have a "Fellowship Table" where you are welcome to have posters, fliers, calendars, or anything else you need to connect with other sisters in the ward for these various activities.
Sister Julie Beck, General RS President has said, in regards to these new changes, that if this seems more serious than it has in the past that's because "it is a serious work". She also stated that it is time to get "out of the business of entertainment". Sisters, this is the Lord's Church and the Lord's Relief Society. Our leaders are encouraging us to be about the Lord's work and charity and unity will be natural by-products. I am very excited about the new changes and can testify that this is definitely inspired by Heavenly Father at this time. I encourage you to get involved with Relief Society and you will grow closer to your Heavenly Father and your sisters in the gospel.
Thank you to everyone that has helped with anything during this Christmas season- from the wonderful RS and Ward Christmas dinners to donations of gifts for Bethany Place and Ward families. The RS has been asked to help make cloth bags for the upcoming youth conference. We will be doing this on Thursday, Jan 7 at 7PM, in combination with the YW activity that evening. Our ward is responsible to make 45 bags that are either 12X12 or 15X15. We should be able to get the material donated. And we really need your help.
If you can help, you have 2 options- Option 1- come on Jan 7 and help work with the YW in making the bags- we will be teaching them basic sewing skills, as needed. Option 2- if you would like to help but can't come that night, let a member of the RS presidency know and we will get the donated fabric to you, so that you can sew some of them on your own time.
We will need to know how many of you are able to help with either option and how many sewing machines will be available for Jan. 7. Please contact a member of the RS presidency to let us know these things.

Recipe from Sister Vish (Stake Preparedness Specialist)
Jill Fields’ Potato Bacon Casserole (you can swap 100% of these fresh ingredients out for food storage items, yahoo!)
4 C frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
½ C finely chopped onion
8 oz bacon cooked and crumbled
1 C shredded cheddar cheese
1 12 oz can evaporated milk
1 large egg or 1/4 C egg substitute
1 ½ t seasoned salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 8 inch square baking dish. Layer half of the potatoes, half the onion, half the bacon and half of the cheese in prepared baking dish. Repeat layers. Combine evaporated milk, egg, and seasoned salt in small bowl. Pour evenly over potato mixture; cover. Bake 55 to 60 minutes. Uncover; bake an additional 5 minutes. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Makes 6 servings.
Don't forget that our Christmas Dinner is Tuesday, December 8 at 6:30PM. It will be held at the church this year and a wonderful dinner will be provided. So bring your friends and those that you visit teach and come join us for a yummy dinner and a relaxing evening.
At the General RS Meeting in September, Sister Beck announced a few new changes to additional RS meetings. Since then, she has continued to add more information and clarify the changes. The biggest change that you will notice is the name change. Rather than being called "Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment" or shortened to "Enrichment", these meetings will now be referred to, simply as "Relief Society Meeting". So, if it is a service project, it now becomes "Relief Society Service Project" or a dinner is a "Relief Society Dinner". You get the picture. Much more simple!
In addition, ward Relief Societies and ward Relief Society Presidents, in counseling with their bishops, are given the "permission" or "authority" to plan and carryout these meetings as they see fit, according to the needs of their wards. What this means is that you may find much difference between wards. So one ward may have monthly meetings, but you might move or travel to another ward, that only has quarterly meetings. After much prayer and consideration, our presidency has decided to go back to a monthly format. You can look for this change, and others that we have decided upon to begin at the first of the year.
Now, due to these changes, we have decided to extend the date of the "graduation" for RS University. For those of you that have been consistently working on this, we will still recognize you next month, but for those of you that haven't- you still have the opportunity. Watch for our monthly meetings to be more geared around this program.

It is easier to move forward and become more prepared if you know exactly where you stand. A HUGE thank you to the RS Committee (formerly known as the Enrichment Committee) for the wonderful, successful Super Saturday yesterday! It was a great time!
Okay, we are ready to begin the Walton Feed order process. The order form is very lengthy (about 7 pages, printed). So if you are interested, I would prefer being able to email it to you. The money for this will be due to me on November 8. The items available range from emergency supplies to bulk foods such as sugar, oats, beans of all types, and grains of almost everything you can imagine. Also, random items such as fructose, whipped honey (Cox brand- something our family has really missed since moving from Utah!), lots of dried items, Ezekiel mix (email me if you want more info on this), and various spices. And LOTS more!
This can be a good way to save money on groceries. Even if you only pick one item that your family uses, buy it at these bulk rates, put aside the money you would've spent on that item during the next 6 months and when we do the order again next year (twice yearly) then you can use that money to purchase more of the bulk foods again and keep rolling it forward. Not only can you save money on groceries, but you can be building up your food storage, and using it, as we've been encouraged to do.

One more thing, although we collect the money on November 8, the order will not arrive here until sometimes in Jan. or Feb. It comes to the area on a semi truck and then is distributed to the various drop points during that time. This helps save on shipping costs. You may be asked to help unload the semi truck when it comes.
It’s apple season! We are blessed to live near wonderful orchards that offer plenty of fresh, delicious and inexpensive choices. If you are a novice canner, applesauce is a good product to get your feet wet with. Also, you can freeze or dry apple slices for long term storage.
Where to go get apples – and fried pies and boiled peanuts! (and for those who have asked me, I like BJ Reece’s place for variety and price, and it’s always good to check Hudson’s for grade-outs)
Also, you can check hardware stores or Walmart or eBay for supplies. For applesauce, you only need a water bath canner; if you decide to can other things and procure a pressure canner, be sure and have the gauge checked before you use it (especially if you bought it used)

Also, I found a GREAT mail-order spice supply company (www.penzeys.com) that specializes in hand-blends and offers an amazing variety of product. I asked them to send me a couple dozen catalogs to pass out to you all and I only got 7, so go online and check out their catalog there; it’s chock full of fantastic general information about kinds of spices, their uses, storage recommendations (hello! They recommend storing a year’s worth!) that will broaden your palate for variety in your food storage.
AND, I stumbled across a restaurant and kitchen supply place when I was in Pittsburgh that is the real deal, hurray! I got killer commercial quality spatulas (the sturdy rubber ones that look like shallow spoons, you know?) for $ 0.88 each (they retail – at a lower quality – for $6-7) and all kinds of goodies like that. I’m telling you about this place specifically because they also carry those aluminum disposable lasagna pans (like when you take a casserole to someone and don’t want to hassle with getting the pan back?) for $ 0.37 each (about $2.00 retail) and the foil lid to match for $ 0.23 each; the ¼ sheet aluminum disposable cake pans are $ 0.36 each, and the big ol’ disposable turkey roaster pans are about $1.35 or so (instead of $5, yay!). Because you have to ship it here instead of buying it at the store, you have to buy the pans and lids by the case (of 100), but if you go in with friends you could divide and conquer! It’s a great thing if you are involved with a meal-swap group.
The website doesn’t list a fraction of what they carry – neither does the catalog- but if you call them and describe what you’re looking for, chances are they are going to have it (and believe me, I was asking for obscure, specialized kitchen tools). This is a great place to get stuff (like great big pots and pans and slotted spoons) to help you do batch processing of meals or even just provide you with good, sturdy kitchenware FOR UBERCHEAP as you cook your food storage! ;) Dean’s Supply (www.shopatdean.com).

Humorous, but does give pause for thought. In the past year we've really seen reasons why being prepared can be so important. From washed out roads that trap people in their homes, and possibilities of pandemics, to gas shortages and extended power outages. Please take the time to evaluate your family's level of "preparedness" and start making steps towards being even more prepared. 10. My neighbors have a TWO year supply! No, they don't. They don't have any food. Did you know that 85% of the members of the church don't have any food storage at all? If your idea of food storage is to eat someone else's food...........this is a really bad plan.
9. I've paid tithing for 20 years...the church can give me a little food. Many members believe that when the times get hard, the church is going to come through like Joseph in Egypt. Absolutely not true. All the church storehouses and welfare farms across the country would only feed 4% of the members of the church. The church has been asking YOU to store food for 75 years. They're NOT storing food for you. Thus, another bad plan.
8. I'm moving in with my children / parents! Really....that's just a bad plan all by itself. But it points out that most members don't have a year's supply because they're PLANNING on eating someone else's food! Of course, since no one HAS any food, we have yet another bad plan.
7. I have a year's supply...and the bullets to go with it! I've heard time and again, "How dumb is that to go to all the time and expense of getting food...just to have some guy with a gun come and shoot my family to take it away?" Here's a better question. Are you afraid of the guy with the gun? Or are you more afraid of BECOMING the guy with the gun? What would you do if your children were starving to death? Would you lie? Cheat? Steal? Would you shoot your neighbor for his food? I guarantee....if you were watching your child starving to death, you would do anything you had to to keep them alive. If you don't have your year's supply, you are putting yourself in danger of losing not only your temporal salvation, but your spiritual salvation as well.
So far, all the reasons we don't have our food storage involve eating someone else's food. Please, don't put your family's temporal salvation in other people's hands. No one is storing food for you. Not your neighbors, not the government...not even the church.
#6. The boat and the 4 wheelers are taking up all my storage space! (priorities!)
#5. 3 letters....Y2K. Ok, that's 2 letters and a number....but they're always making way too much out of everything! This is never going to happen!" (Every prophecy that has ever been given WILL happen.)
#4. If anything DOES happen, the government will be here within hours! (insert laughter) Did you know the government has been telling us that we need to have food storage? They're actually CALLING it food storage! We now have the government telling us to store food, water, medicines...whatever we will need to be able to stay in our homes for several months.
#3. I can't afford scrap booking AND food storage. The average food storage can cost as little as a dollar a day. We live in the richest society in the history of the world, and while there are cases where money may be a problem, most of the time it is a matter of priorities. We have chosen bigger homes, nicer cars, more tv's, computers, vacations...everything is more important than our food storage. If I asked, "Who has a cell phone?" most of you would say yes. You pay at least $30 a month to have a cell phone....that's about a dollar a day...the cost of one year's supply of food for your child. Is your cell phone really more important than your child's temporal salvation? You have to make food storage a priority.
2. I'm waiting for the cannery to sell Papa John's dehydrated pizza! Food storage has always had a stigma attached to it. If it's not wheat, beans and powdered milk, it's not food storage. With the system I use, food storage can be sweet and sour chicken, tamale pie, chile and cornbread, beef stew, shepherd's pie, minestrone...even chocolate chip cookies! Your imagination (and your pocketbook) are the only limitations you have.
And the #1 reason why I don't have my year's supply of food? A year?? I thought it was 72 hours!!

(One of my favorite things they have is something called "Clear Gel"- it thickens without heat. Great to use to make fruit flavored syrups from fruit juice, etc... without having to heat. Chicken Co-op Guidelines
1.Everyone participating will take a turn to go, schedule your own alternate if necessary.
2.Driving team must also stay for the half-hour distribution.
3.When you pick up your chicken, bring $14 for the next trip.
4.All chicken should be picked up within an hour of being called, during the half-hour window provided. It cannot be kept frozen. Chicken should be available for pick-up before noon.*
5.Each participant will get one 5 pound bag of boneless breast and one 5 pound bag of tenderloins. If there is a shortage of product on the day of pick-up, the team going to the plant decides what to get.
6.Please put receipt and change in the envelope/folder to allow us to keep track of costs. Prices fluctuate.
7.Once the cash surplus is sufficient, it will be divided (refunded) among the participants.

* If chicken is not picked up, and I can’t easily find someone to buy it, it will be donated to a charity.
Also, to clarify because the chicken comes in cases of 4, if one person does a “no show”, it jeopardizes the ability of three other families to get chicken. Remember:
A)if you are unable to get your chicken, you MUST find a replacement that YOU are responsible for (and let me know who that is)
B)if you don't find a replacement more than twice, you will be dropped from the co-op.
C)If you are buying someone else’s chicken YOU are responsible for making sure that you get the right amount of chicken.
If you have not yet taken a turn to drive or make calls, it’s time to step and either be a group leader or make sure that your team KNOWS that you will make the phone calls to let people know when the chicken arrives. I’ve tried to match the teams so that people who can’t drive can help in one of those two ways. Group leader “work” takes place ENTIRELY in hours that are “convenient” to working schedules—making phone calls and emails to collect uncollected money. A final way to contribute is to buy gas for whomever on your team drives.
There are currently 32 slots in the co-op, so the purchase should be 8 cases breasts and 8 cases tenderloins.This might require two people to split the purchase (4 sets each).
Driving Day Instructions:
If there is a price increase, you need to be prepared to cover. (An extra $36 should handle it.) This hasn’t happened yet, but could.
Leave between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.
Count the cash in the envelope and make a note of it at the top of the column.
If there is a shortage of chicken, you must make the decision of what, if anything to substitute.
When you are within a half hour of the pick-up place, call the list to let them know to come get chicken. Please call the bold numbers whenever there is a choice between numbers.
Stay half an hour to distribute the chicken—keeping careful records of who pays how much and who picks up their chicken.
Leave any extra chicken in a box on the front porch.
You should be finished with the whole thing around 11 a.m.—give or take a little.

Take 575 North to Exit 19, it is Hwy 20 EAST to Cumming. Turn left at the end of the exit. (Exit 16 is Hwy 20 West—don’t take it.)
Stay on Hwy 20 through Lathemtown and Free Home communities. You will come to a small town square with a light, but just before getting to it, you will see on your right the Tyson factory.
At the light, turn RIGHT on Castleberry Road. The second driveway turns into the plant, go to the low brown building and park where indicated.

Take GA 400 North
Exit 15, Bald Ridge Marina Road
Turn Left
4th light, turn LEFT onto Tribble Gap Road
Go through one more light, second drive on the fight is the plant. There is a small black Tyson sign.

Wednesday Endowment Sessions, effective Wednesday, 7 October, we increase our schedule to include three endowment sessions:

If anyone has made Wednesday appointments for either the 10:00 AM or 12:00 PM Wednesday endowment sessions on or after 7 October please let the temple people know which session they prefer with the new schedule.
Saturday Endowment Sessions, beginning Saturday, 10 October, we increase our schedule to include four endowment sessions:

Patrons with previously scheduled Saturday reservations on or after 10 October need not make any change to their reservations, as we have simply added an additional endowment session.
BAPTISMS
We have added an additional time to schedule proxy baptism sessions at 1:00 PM on Saturday. Baptisms are scheduled through Sister Becky Crahan, Assistant to the Matron. This may be done by calling the temple, by sending an e-mail request to birmi-off@ldschurch.org or by calling Sis. Crahan directly at (205) 621-1875.
The Strengthening Marriage class will be held on Fridays from 7 to 9 pm at the stake center. It is taught by Kent and Vicki Griffith and lasts for 6 weeks. The first class will be on Sept. 11. Contact the Griffiths for more information (770-928-2567).
There is a very good article in the July Ensign about Modesty. It is written by Sister Silvia Allred, a counselor in the General Relief Society Presidency. In addition to defining modesty, it reminds us that modesty is for all- not just the youth. Sister Allred states: "The way we dress demonstrates our understanding of the gospel of Jesus Christ." Welcome to the ReliefSocietyUniversity. How often do we wonder where the last year went and feel like we haven't progressed over the months? The purpose of this program is to offer each sister motivation, opportunity, direction and support to aid her in reaching her divine potential and destiny as a daughter of our Heavenly Father. The goal is to help each of us be better more fulfilled women in 6 months than we are right now.This program will only last for 6 months and the “degrees” will be awarded at the Christmas Party in December.Any sister who actively participates in this program will be able to look back and know that she accomplished things that have temporal and eternal worth.
The program is simple. Look at the goals and plan how to accomplish them. Try to make this a “stretch” effort.Work on things that you need to accomplish or would like to, not things you are already doing. When you have completed a goal put your initial by the goal. You cannot count 2 goals accomplished from the same effort.We will be offering some Enrichment Classes that are coordinated with this effort and will count as accomplishing a goal.So watch for these classes and take advantage of them!

The sister who completes the most goals will get special recognition as the Relief Society University Valedictorian and the sister who completes the 2nd highest total will be the Relief Society University Salutatorian. We hope that each sister in the ward will participate. We think it will be fun and rewarding! Good luck to each of you as you embark on this adventure of growth and development.
